Our
Group also toured Palau topside attractions courtesy of Palau
Visitor Authority and
Sam’s Tours.
One of
the highlights of our city tour of Koror Palau was the Koror City
Jail, were we visited the story board workshop for male prisoners.
Story boards, handmade wooden boards with local story legends carved
onto them, are Palau’s most popular souvenirs. As a group we were
impressed by the quality of the story boards and proceeded to
purchase many pieces of artwork.

Our
second stop on our city tour was a Bai, a traditional Palauan
meeting house. There are two different types of Bai. One was for
chiefs only; used for important meetings. Another was a type of
clubhouse where village youngsters were taught about fishing,
hunting and carpentry. Village young girls were brought from other
villages to entertain the men with native folk dances & singing
during meetings.
A Bai
stands on a stone platform with four corner stones which served as
back rests for the Chiefs during meetings. The four corner post of a
Bai stand for the four leading clans of a village where chiefs
governed the area. Many Bai were destroyed during typhoons, local
wars and before WW-2, when the Palauan were moved away from their
traditional villages, by the Japanese.
